    Some Thrifty Yard Sale Finds

Published by Pam Kessler | 473 words. · About 3 minutes to read this article. - 32 Comments

I finally got to get out of the house last Friday and get out to some sales.

Real life activities this summer have really been putting a kink in my yard sale shopping.

Not that I mind that much though. I'd rather hang out at my son's ball game than hang out at an estate sale with people I don't even know and don't even tuck in at night 🙂

When I saw the red handle of this cool vintage kitchen thingie sticking out of a box of cheap silverware, I grabbed it. Red is great to decorate in the kitchen with for the 4th of July, Christmas, Valentine's or just a plain old Tuesday.

At the time I bought it, I was just buying based on the fact it was vintage kitchenware, had a red wooden handle and was 50 cents. But thanks to the good people of Instagram and Facebook who identified this for me, I now know it's a tomato slicer.

Hi, my name is Pam. I am a thermos hoarder.

Yes, I bought another thermos. No, I didn't "need" it. In the traditional sense of the word at least.

This milk glass bowl was only 50 cents, so of course, I needed it too.

I believe it's a flower bowl. Which has never ever seen the inside of a funeral home. Never.

Raise your hand if you know anything about alabaster fruit. Anyone?

Because the only thing I know about it is that if you find some for $1.00, you just have to buy it.

    Here's my new buddy, Trigger.

He's missing the clock that used to be to the left of him on the pedestal, but I just sort of fell in love with him, clock or no clock, as soon as I spied him on the table at the sale.

This white wall pocket shaped like a vase was calling out to me. It was saying "Buy me, Pam. You know you'll find something to do with me!"

When I saw this shelf unit, I immediately thought mid-century modern. Or MCM to us in the know 🙂

Not 1,000% sure if that is what it is, but it certainly has that look to it. Please tell me I didn't spend 4 bucks on a garage sale organizer from Target!

Oh, and my oak banker's chair. I could never forget my yummy chair find.

The chair part works (rolls and sits well on the base), but the wood is in horrible shape. Horrible.

Almost looks like someone started to refinish it and then stopped after stripping 1/10th of it. Plus we have paint splotches and masking tape goop on it. A project chair, for sure.

But I have been wanting one of these for my office for YEARS, so when I saw the price, I grabbed it. $5.00

I thought it was a cheese slicer! No matter, your finds are in all the right colors and cheap to boot! I kind of like the chair just as it is. Lots of important financial decisions were probably made by the person who sat there. There are no large bills taped to the bottom are there?

My mind is already at work. Lots of fun options for Trigger to be gazing upon. I wonder what you'll do with him? Keep us posted.

Nope. I think it's the real thing. Haven't seen a shelf like yours at the retail stores. Lots of display shelves for your treasures!

I think the shelf thingies is a record stand. Not sure but it looks like one. I enjoy your humor.

*Raising hand. I know about alabaster fruit. Those are good pieces you found. Not sure if you want to sell them, but they do VERY well on the old ebay. People often call the marble fruit alabaster - but that isn't right. Marble fruit is shiny and alabaster fruit has the soft finish like your pieces. Your two bananas are probably worth about $30.00. I have sold a lot of it over the years. Great find a- as well as everything else. I am a Thermos hoarder too - but I only collect the red ones. That doesn't mean I don't buy other colors - I just put those in the booth!

This is how I've started looking at this collector, hoarder whatever thing...get it, love it, use it or just let the dust collect on it 🙂 You gotta do what makes you happy! That thermos just might have ended up in the landfill...you saved it!! Wish I had a thermos, I'd trade you it for the wall pocket. That's my love. I have about 10 of them on a small wall section in my foyer. Some are McCoy, one belonged to my grandmother and some are handmade. One McCoy is a frog wall pocket...that one disturbs some people. Anyway, once again, your great eye got you some great finds. Now, go slice some maters. Best, Vicki

You always make me laugh, Pam! Maybe you should write a witty newspaper column. Do they do that kind of thing anymore? Online column? Anyway, these things call out our name, and we can't turn away from them. It would be like not listening to the cries of little needy children. Of course you had to bring them home. It doesn't matter WHAT they were. What matters is what they will Become.

I was going to tell you it's a tomato slicer, but I won't. I am waiting to see the banker chair results, as I need to do something like that to my bathroom woodwork. My builder just rolled his eyes; he just installs.

Great finds and I'm jealous of the Thermos collection. Just can't seem to find any here yet but I'm hoping.

I am never passing up one of those tomato slicers again! Do you know how many times I have seen those at garage sales only to be deterred by the fact I had no idea what it was?!

I am in the group of people who buy project things and stick them in a corner of the garage. It's getting pretty bad and my dogs are running out of room to hang out. So unless they decide they want to get creative, I guess it's up to me to make some progress!

You had some GREAT finds, Pam! I'm looking forward to seeing how you use them! Real life has been happening for me this year, too...only a couple of thrifting days and I haven't been to a garage sale since May. Gotta get back in the groove...before summer is OVER.

Best wishes with the chair makeover and I'm feeling guilty for seeing sneak peeks of your fabulous hauls on Instagram but I'm seriously loving that app. I think you and I are running neck and neck with our collection of vintage thermos. Can't get enough of those things. After the mystery was solved on IG about the tomato slicer, I've decided I need one too.
