Learn how to make a DIY Stove Top Home Fragrance with just a few ingredients. A quick and easy potpourri recipe to make your home smell fresh and cozy!
There are lots of ways to cozy up your home - surrounding yourself with family mementos and antiques, putting snuggly soft pillows on the sofa, a comforting plush throw thrown across the arm of a chair.
Even a soft fluffy dog lying at your feet would cozy up your home (my Labradoodle is lying on my feet as we speak).
But scent is also a great way to give your home that cozy farmhouse feel.
How do I make my home smell good?
Sure I could burn a candle or spray some store-bought scent into the air, but with my son's asthma-like issues and my sensitive nose, I prefer a lighter scent like this lemon, rosemary and vanilla scent I'm going to show you how to make.
And it is all-natural.
Lemon And Rosemary DIY Stove Top Home Fragrance
Ingredients:
- Pint sized mason jar
- 2 small lemons
- 2-3 sprigs of rosemary
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Water
Instructions:
- Cut lemons into thin slices
- Put sliced lemons, rosemary and vanilla into pint sized mason jar
- Fill jar with water and cover with lid
- Jar can be refrigerated for 1-2 weeks
- When ready to use, pour contents of jar into a sauce pan along with an extra cup of water
- Bring water to a boil on the stove and then reduce to a low simmer
Safety tips:
- Add more water during the day as the water evaporates.
- Do not leave it unattended.
- Turn handle of the pot away from the edge of the stove so no one dumps the hot water on themselves.
- Do not leave the house with it on the stove, because that goes hand in hand with Do not leave it unattended.
Did I leave out anything?
Oh yeah, DO NOT LEAVE IT UNATTENDED!
This is my pot on the wood stove. I normally use a cast iron one, but the black cast iron pot didn't show up as well on the black stove, so it was the cute farmhouse white enamelware pot for the win.
And BTW, I don't leave it unattended.
And to keep up with my crafting faux pas, like leaving the sewing needle in my Valentine's Day banner, the cute vintage mason jar that I used for the photos has a big old chip out of the rim! Glad I'm not drinking out of it!
I may need to start wearing my glasses when I'm taking photos.
So pin to your heart's content.

We just know this smells fabulous. We too love simmer pots and can't wait to make this one! Thanks so much for sharing.
Jamie
Hi! Can you put this in a small crock pot? Same amt of water?
Pam
You could and yes, I'd use the same amount of water. Just remember to add more if it gets low.
Jess
I love Rosemary and Lemon, but not vanilla. Does the vanilla add a vanilla scent or does it do something chemical to make the other stuff work better?
Pam
Just a very light vanilla scent. You can skip it and it shouldn't make a difference.
Amy
Wuuuunderfulllll idea. Love it, but what was that you said about unattended? Hmmmmm.... Just kidding. You're hysterical.
Carol
I didn't notice how long you're suppose to simmer. And the part of adding water daily as it evaporates, does this mean that you put it in a dish and set it out then add water as it evaporates?
Thanks for the idea, but I need to know how to finish it.
Pam
It's made to be used as a simmering scent on the stove.
You can make a few jars at a time and then bring them out when you want to use them or give them as hostess gifts. When you're ready to use them, pour the contents of the jar into a pan on the stove, add a cup of water and bring to a boil, then reduce it to a low simmer. And that's it. You just leave it simmering all day, adding extra water if it gets too low. Just remember to turn it off before you go to bed or leave the house.
Nancy
Good question. Mine too. How long to simmer/just service it out afterwards...how long will I last???

Since I don't like to use aerosol sprays in my house, I'm totally going to give this a try. I love lemon and rosemary, so it's a win win. Thanks for sharing!
Cami
I love lemon, I love rosemary! I most definitely want to try this! So much fun being in this blog hop with you!

I don't have any lemons but I do have oranges so I think I will try it with them . What do you think?
Pam
I've not tried oranges, but I bet it would smell wonderful!
Deborah
I have done orange slices and cinnamon sticks and it is really great. Will definitely be trying the lemon/rosemary combo though!

Can't wait to try this, Pam!! Love that it's all natural, too. As much as I love candle glow, I worry about the effect on our respiratory systems. I LOVE lemons, and my husband loves rosemary, so what could be more perfect?!
Thanks for sharing this great idea!
Wishing you a cozy and warm weekend,

Awesome! I'm putting lemons and rosemary on my shopping list! And I totally loved that the jar had a chip in it - I noticed that and thought 'how cool that the jar even has a chip - how farmhouse chic!'. Love your photos - they are cheery enough to cozy things up all by themselves!

It looks so good I wish I could smell it!! Definitely going to try this!!

Beautiful pictures and I just love that enamelware pot. We are expecting some snow this weekend and I think I will try out your idea to scent our home while we are stuck inside! Excited to join you for Farmhouse Fridays this year!!
Linda
You make a very good point. I left the house with a simmering pot of cinnamon and other spices on the stove. It boiled dry and I walked in to a dreadful scent. I never did get that pan clean. I'll never do that again!
Thanks for sharing.

Pam
Oh, no! At least it didn't go up in flames!
