Do you remember the cute little vintage tin dollhouse I turned into a birdhouse in the spring?
Well, the birds thumbed their beaks at my birdhouse all summer. Not a single bird as much as looked at.
Didn't sit on it.
Didn't call their realtor about it.
Was it too fancy for them? They didn't like the floor plan? They didn't appreciate the mid-century architecture?
You all know it wasn't because it was pink! Who can turn down a pink house!
So I brought it up onto the porch and threw some pumpkins on it and made it part of my fall decor out there.
I sort of got used to seeing it out the back door when I was sitting in my living room. It made me smile.
And now, just about the time I've decided to bring it in for the winter to keep it from rusting too much. NOW, I have a gaggle of birds sitting on the roof and peering down the chimney (hey, there's a front door you know).
NOW they want to sign a lease?
Too bad. They had their chance and they blew it.
So I plugged the birdhouse holes in the back
And barred the front door.
OK, so that's just a piece of wood setting there, it's not like I'm fighting off zombies or anything.
It's your move, birdies.
P.S. - Before the Pam Hates Birds crowd comes out of the closet here, the birds can go live in any one of my gourds I've cleaned out for them. Or the purple martin house that a martin has never stepped foot in (do all birds snub me?). Or the trees. Oh, and we do have trees in abundance around here, somewhere close to 40 I think. So really, they do have plenty of other non-vintage dollhouse options available to them. Whether they listen to me is another story (birds have ears, right?).

Sounds like me when I have to battle the swallows from building their icky nests on our porches and lights. Lol! Birds are stubborn critters.

What can you do? Those birds are just not sensible or dependable! Bird-brained, that's what they are. Maybe next summer you'll have a smarter crowd. That is, if you give the another chance! I'd live in that house if it was big enough!
Pam
Ha! I guess that is exactly where the term bird-brained comes from 🙂 They're not know for their smarts, or design choices!

Ha, I like what Joanne said...must have been too hot for them out in the sun & all. Now they like it better under your covered porch. I like it as part of your fall display. Do birds need houses except when they're raising young? Hmm, never thought about that...do they even need a house right now? You took care of that need though!

Too funny! I love the way it looks on your porch. I can imagine a "closed for the season" sign on the boarded-up front.
Shelly
So funny! I love the way you write! Those paper towels cracked me up!

He he he! Such uncooperative birdies you're growing in Ohio, Pam. Your birdhouse on a ladder is adorable and I hope you aren't attacked while you're moving it indoors. I have visions of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and you'd be Tippi Hedren. Better wear a hat when you move it.

It's an adorable doll house, too good for those birds. Also, I suspect Joanne was right about the oven-effect. Thanks for another good laugh at the expense of your picky feathered friends!

Loved your original post about this dollhouse. I picked up a homemade dollhouse at an Estate sale a while back. It even had the original plans on how you build it tucked away inside. I pictured some dad working at it after his daughter was sleeping for the night. I treasure it. Your post is one I check Everyday! Love your humor and your outlook on life!

Here's my observation, Pam. A metal bird house that gets sun during the day is the same as an oven, and birds know that. As soon as you put it on your porch, it was protected from the elements, and not in the sun, and a lovely spot to hang in.
Pam
So are you saying I was trying to cook the birds 🙂 That does make total sense though!

Ha! Ha! Love it! This was my favorite post/project you have shared this year. I love those tin doll houses with their little off scale plastic furniture. When I was five, I asked my parents for a doll house for Christmas. My father made me a huge, lovely wooden home complete with winding staircase and a front porch. Fully furnished with wooden beds and dressers and hand sewn curtains and bedding.....it was truly lovely and my adult self still gets misty eyed when I think of all the hours and love my parents put into this gift. My five year old self? Well she wasn't impressed...."This was not on my list. It's not even pink...", she thought. Whenever I come across these tin little lovelies, I am reminded of that Christmas and how sometimes, good taste comes with age. The doll house is long gone and my mother has passed too, but I still have that hand made furniture lovingly tucked away.
Pam
Oh, that's such a great story! If only we could appreciate, as a little kid, all the hard work and sacrifices our parents made! Sounds like it was a wonderful dollhouse 🙂

So funny! Birds always go where they're not supposed to go...
Love that birdhouse!
Pam
They're finicky aren't they!

I'm so excited, I have a vintage house tucked in my closet! Before I moved I had a place to display it. But not in my new home! What a great idea and I have a perfect spot in the back yard! Thanks! You have made my day! My dad found mine in his neighbor's trash, furniture and all! Now that's a find!
