I have used a mixture of baby powder and water to make a paste and rub onto the shepherds hook or whatever hanger you have. It stays on a long time and definitely works to keep the ants away.

In reply to Deb. I've always done just 1 minute. And since you mentioned 5 minutes I googled it and my friends at Google (lol) also say 1 minute if you are trying to kill microorganisms. Longer certainly would not hurt though!
