The first thing on my list of yard sale finds to redo or repurpose or upcycle or whatever we call it nowadays is . . .
the vintage tomato slicer.
I find vintage wooden handled kitchen tools all the time at yard sales and they're prime material for upcycling!
What really freaked me out about this thing is that it has these little hack saw blade looking things on it.
But I'm a girl who likes a little bit of danger.
And my fingers. I like my fingers too.
So I repurposed it as . . .
a tomato slicer.
Just kidding. It does cut a mean tomato slice though. I never get them that even and thick with just a paring knife.
I really made the tomato slicer into a photo/postcard holder.
Plop it in a mason jar and off you go.
I know it's really one of those so-simple-it's-silly kind of ideas, but it is what popped into my mind when I first saw the thing at the yard sale. Even before I knew it was a tomato slicer.
Side story. I went ahead and cut the tomato for that photo and put it in the fridge for hamburgers later that night. Then sat down to get my photos ready for this post and noticed all the gunk and black spots and hairs (?) on the tomato slicer in the second photo.
So, that poor tomato, who gave his life to support this blog, was tossed in the trash.
Then I cleaned the slicer and cut another one to actually eat.

You are so funny--I love the tomato slicer--I hate slicing tomatoes. I need one!

Who knew it would be able to do double duty? Works great and looks good holding that old postcard, too. Glad you didn't eat that tomato...

I still want a tomato slicer.

I'm very afraid of anything sharp. I am still using steak knives I've had for close to 40 years. I know the dull ones are the worst. But a big sharp knife just sends shivers down my spine. The tomato you trashed did its bit for the authenticity of your blog, so it's being trashed was not in vain...

I love these old time-saving devices. Until the tomato has to be thrown out and a new one cut up (with a knife?) Sounds exactly like something that would happen in my kitchen but at least your slicer now has a new lease on life. How cute would it be displayed with a tomato pic? 🙂

I really don't like washing dishes, except when I find something when I go yardsaling and then, I can't wait to get it home and get it clean. Crazy, right? I don't want to do the dishes after a meal, but give me a crusty piece and I am up for the challenge. I never realized those slicers worked so well!
Perhaps your error in judgement was due to the humidity we havae been having lately? Giving you an out my friend...

Well, I did swish it around in soapy water before I used it the first time. Before I used it again, I actually used a Brillo pad and a toothbrush to get all the 60 year old gunk off of it 🙂
