DIY scarecrow tutorial for fall decor. Transforming an inexpensive JoAnn Fabrics' stick scarecrow into the talk of the town!

This DIY scarecrow tutorial is one of those crafts that is so quick and easy you just have to give it a try.

By starting with an inexpensive scarecrow you can pick up at the craft stores (JoAnn Fabrics, Home Depot, etc), you can transform it into the talk of the scarecrow town. The envy of the scarecrow neighborhood. The scarecrow to beat all scarecrows.

This is how she started off life.

Plain. Simple. A little cheap looking.

She did have a bright smile and a pretty face, so she had that going for her!

Here's what I did to make my plain Jane scarecrow into something a little more fun.

DIY Scarecrow Tutorial Using An Inexpensive Craft Store Scarecrow:

      • Buy one of the super inexpensive stick scarecrows from the craft store (JoAnn Fabrics has plenty of them, I've seen them at Home Depot and Big Lots before also)
      • Raid your husband's closet for clothes or pick up some cheap thrift store clothes for him/her (half-price day is your friend)
      • If you can find a cute straw hat, all the better
      • Stuff straw into the arms and legs of the clothing (I filled plastic grocery bags with straw and rolled them into sausage-like things to fill the arms and legs. This keeps most of the straw inside the body and not leaking out the sleeves and pant legs)

      • Staple her new pants to her previously flimsy pants and button her shirt up onto her torso.
      • A true scarecrow doesn't have hands or feet so need to worry about shoes or gloves. Just glue some stray straw to the inside of her pants and sleeves to make her look more authentically scarecrow-ey (Why they sell high temp glue guns without an operator's license is beyond me. That stuff is HOT, so be careful.)

    • Plant her in the ground and she's good to go for the fall season!

always come out as we would have liked.

But at you least you tried.
